Why strongholds are on a ring

Strongholds are spread over rings that grow outward from the world origin. The positions come only from the seed, so the map can compute them without exploring.

Click a stronghold to copy a teleport command, or note the coordinates and walk there. Bring eyes of ender anyway, you need up to twelve to fill the portal frames.

Questions

How many strongholds are there?

Worlds from Minecraft 1.9 onward have 128 strongholds, laid out in rings around the world origin. Older versions only have 3. The map shows the ones that match your version.

How far is the first stronghold?

The first ring has three strongholds between roughly 1,280 and 2,816 blocks from the origin at 0, 0. They are never at spawn, which is why most players travel to them with eyes of ender.

Is the End portal at the marker?

The marker is the start of the stronghold. The portal room is inside, close to it, so dig down near the marker or follow the corridors until you find the portal room.

Does it work for Bedrock?

Not yet. Bedrock places strongholds differently. This map is for Java worlds for now.
