Why pre-generate

Making new terrain is the heaviest thing a server does, and it happens while players explore. Pre-generating makes it once, ahead of time, so exploring stays smooth.

The number of chunks is the square of the width in chunks: radius times two, divided by 16, squared.

Questions

How fast is Chunky?

It depends on the server. Small servers manage 50 to 150 chunks a second; a strong server can do several hundred. Run it for a minute and read /chunky progress to get your own speed.

How big will the world be on disk?

About 3 KB per chunk is a good estimate, so a radius of 5000 blocks is a few gigabytes. Real size depends on how built-up the area is.

Should I also set a world border?

Yes. A border at the pre-generated radius keeps players from making new chunks past it.
