Ticks in plain words
The game updates the world 20 times a second. One update is a tick, and most timings in commands, redstone and plugin configs are counted in them. Type ticks to see the real time, or seconds to get the ticks to put in a config.
The in-game clock is separate: a day is 24000 ticks, and tick 0 is 6:00 in the morning. The table shows the usual landmarks.
Questions
How many ticks are in a second?
20, when the server keeps up. Each tick is 50 milliseconds. If the server lags the real time per tick is longer, which is why a slow server feels slow.
How long is a Minecraft day?
24000 ticks, which is 20 real minutes: about 10 minutes of day, 7 of night and short sunrise and sunset in between.
What does /time set 0 do?
It sets the clock to the start of the morning. In ticks: 0 is 6:00 am, 6000 is noon, 12000 is sunset, 13000 is the start of night and 18000 is midnight.
Which commands use ticks?
/time, /effect with a duration in older versions, /schedule, redstone repeaters and many plugin settings such as teleport delays. When a setting says "seconds" check that it does not mean ticks.
