Nether portal coordinate calculator
Convert between Overworld and Nether coordinates and see where your portals will link.
A portal here links to your portal at 1200, -800. The game searches about 128 blocks around the spot for a portal before it makes a new one.
/tp @s 150 64 -100 How to line two portals up
Build the first portal in the Overworld and note its coordinates (press F3). Divide X and Z by 8 and build the second portal at that spot in the Nether. Now they link both ways.
To link to a base, work backwards: multiply the Nether coordinates by 8 to find the Overworld place the portal will lead to.
Questions
Why 8 to 1?
One block in the Nether is eight blocks in the Overworld, so a trip of 1,000 blocks in the Overworld is 125 blocks in the Nether. That is why the Nether is used for fast travel.
My portal went to the wrong place. Why?
When you step through, the game looks for a portal near the converted spot. If there is none within the search range, it makes a new one. If two of your portals are closer together than the range, the game may pick the wrong one. Keep linked portals well apart, or build them at the exact converted coordinates.
How far does the search reach?
About 128 blocks around the spot when you come from the Nether side, and 16 blocks when you come from the Nether into the Overworld range. This tool shows the range for the direction you chose.
Does the height change?
No, the Y level stays the same, but the Nether only goes from 0 to 127 (the roof is bedrock at 127), so build portals between 5 and 120.
