Minecraft server RAM calculator

Tell us about your server and get a recommended amount of memory, with the workings, so you can check them.

Recommended 3 GB
  • The server itself0.90 GB
  • 10 players at view distance 100.80 GB
  • Plugins0.30 GB
  • Headroom for Java (15%)×1.15

Dropping the view distance by 3 chunks could save about 1 GB.

On Saryno: 1 GB free, plus 2 GB paid = $6/month or $54/year.

Start with this

How the estimate works

The calculator adds up four things and then adds 15% headroom, because Java needs free space to clean up memory without pausing the game.

Software sets the starting point: vanilla and Paper are lean, Fabric with mods needs more, and a modpack needs the most. Each player adds memory for the chunks around them, and that grows with the square of the view distance. Plugins or mods add a little each, and a large explored world adds a bit more.

The result is rounded up to a whole number of GB. The price shown is for the memory above the free 1 GB on Saryno.

Questions

How accurate is this?

It is a rule of thumb built from how servers behave, not a measurement of yours. Servers differ a lot with the exact plugins, mods and how players play. Treat the result as a starting point, watch your real memory use for a day, and adjust.

Does more RAM make a server faster?

Only if the server is running out of memory. If it is short of CPU, more RAM changes nothing. Too much memory can even lengthen garbage-collection pauses. Lower the view distance first if the server lags.

Why does view distance matter so much?

Every player loads the chunks around them, and the number of chunks grows with the square of the distance. Going from 10 to 7 chunks cuts the area loaded around each player by about half.

How much RAM does a modpack need?

Large modpacks need several gigabytes before anyone joins, because they load thousands of blocks and items. If the pack lists a recommended amount, use that.
