How the codes work
A Minecraft color code is a section sign followed by one character. 0 to f pick one of sixteen colors, and l, o, n, m and k add bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and scrambled letters. r resets everything. A new color also clears the formats before it, so write the color first and then the formats.
Type or paste your text above with & codes and the preview shows how it will look on the dark background of the multiplayer list and chat. To build a full server list message with two lines, use the MOTD generator.
Questions
Should I type § or &?
Plugins and server configs almost always take & (for example in a chat format or MOTD) and turn it into the real section sign for you. The § sign is what Minecraft itself uses, and it is what you need in server.properties written as \u00a7, or in commands that do not translate &.
How do I use a hex color like #ff8800?
Since Minecraft 1.16 many plugins accept &#ff8800 and the long form &x&f&f&8&8&0&0. Vanilla chat uses JSON text with "color":"#ff8800" instead. Which one works depends on the plugin, so check its page.
Why does obfuscated text look scrambled?
That is the point: the &k code swaps the letters for random ones every frame, often used for effects. It cannot be shown still, so the preview leaves it as plain text.
Do these work in sign text and books?
Signs and books use the same section-sign codes in the game itself, but typing them in survival needs the § character, which is hard to enter. On a server, plugins like EssentialsX turn & into colors for you.
