| Steve | 5627dd98-e6be-3c21-b8a8-e92344183641 |

How an offline UUID is made
A server in offline mode does not ask Mojang who a player is. It makes a version 3 UUID from the text "OfflinePlayer:" followed by the exact name, using MD5. The same name always gives the same UUID, which is why switching a server between online and offline mode makes players lose their inventories: their UUID changes.
Names are 3 to 16 letters, numbers and underscores. Capital letters count: Steve and steve are two different offline players.
Questions
When do I need an offline UUID?
Only when the server runs with online-mode=false, for example behind a proxy that has its own checks or on a closed LAN. There, a player's UUID is made from their name, so whitelist.json and ops.json must hold these name-based UUIDs.
What about a normal (online-mode) server?
Then every player has a real UUID from Mojang and this tool gives the wrong one. Add players with /whitelist add name instead, and the server looks the UUID up itself.
Is it safe to turn online-mode off?
Not on its own: anyone can join using anybody's name, including yours. Only do it behind a proxy such as Velocity that checks accounts, and make sure the server cannot be reached directly. Saryno networks do this for you.
Where do the files go?
Put whitelist.json and ops.json in the server's main folder and restart, or run /whitelist reload. On Saryno, open the Files tab and drop them in.
