How to reduce ping to a Minecraft server

By Kosy · · 1 min read

Ping is how long a message takes to reach the server and come back, in milliseconds. High ping feels like delay when you swing, break a block or open a chest. It is different from server lag, which is the server being slow.

Tell them apart

  • Ping high, TPS 20: the network is the cause.
  • Ping fine, TPS low: the server is overloaded.

Open the player list (Tab) on Java to see ping bars, or use the server status checker.

What lowers ping

  1. Use a wired connection. Wi-Fi adds delay and spikes. A cable removes both.
  2. Close what uses the network. Downloads, streaming and cloud backups compete with the game.
  3. Join a server near you. Distance is the biggest part of ping. A server on the other side of an ocean cannot beat the speed of light.
  4. Restart your router if it has been on for weeks.
  5. Skip VPNs unless you need them; they add a hop.
  6. Use the IP address if a name is slow to resolve on your network.

If you run the server

Choose a region close to most of your players. Keep the server software current, and do not run heavy tasks (backups, map renders) during peak hours. Performance settings help too.

Players on phones and consoles

Mobile data can be slower and less steady than Wi-Fi. For Bedrock players, a strong Wi-Fi signal near the router helps most.
