How to enable command blocks on a Minecraft server

By Kosy · · 1 min read

Command blocks are off by default on a server. Turn them on in two steps.

1. Switch them on

In server.properties:

enable-command-block=true

On Saryno, open Settings, find Allow command blocks, switch it on and restart the game. A restart is needed: the setting is read when the server starts.

2. Get one

You must be an operator and in creative mode:

/gamemode creative
/give @s command_block

Place it and right-click to open its screen. Only operators in creative can edit one.

The three types

  • Impulse runs once when powered.
  • Chain runs after the block behind it.
  • Repeat runs every tick while powered. Be careful: a repeating block that does something heavy can lag the server.

Keeping it safe

  • Only operators can place or change command blocks, so do not op people you do not trust.
  • A command block can run any command, as the server. Review what a player built before you leave it running.
  • Use /gamerule commandBlockOutput false to stop the chat spam.
  • Restrict commands in the world with permissions if you use LuckPerms.

See server commands for owners and gamerules explained.
