Bedrock 26.60 and NetherNet: what changed for servers
If Bedrock players on phones, consoles or Windows suddenly cannot join your Java server through Geyser, an update is the most likely cause. Bedrock 26.60, released on 27 October 2026, changed how the game connects to servers it was not made by Mojang for.
What changed
Until 26.60, a Bedrock client reached a server over RakNet: one UDP port, nothing else. 26.60 clients use NetherNet instead. A join now has two steps:
- The client sends a short TCP request to the server address and port, and gets back the join details.
- It then opens a WebRTC connection over UDP, on a port the server names in those details.
A server that only opens UDP on one port, which is how every Geyser guide used to say to set it up, answers neither step for an updated client. Players who have not updated can still join, which is why the problem looks random: some friends get in and some do not.
What a working setup needs
- Geyser build 1273 or newer. Older builds know nothing about NetherNet. Check with
geyser versionin the console. - In Geyser's
config.yml, transport: both(to keep older players) ortransport: nethernet. - TCP and UDP open on the join port, and a second UDP port for WebRTC when you use
both, set withwebrtc-port. - Geyser has to advertise the right public address and ports. It finds its public address itself, but the ports it hands out must be the ones the outside world can reach.
A quick test from any computer outside your network:
curl http://YOUR_ADDRESS:PORT/v1/join
If that returns a short block of JSON with a protocol number and version, step one works. A timeout means the TCP port is not reaching Geyser.
If your players say "Unable to connect"
- Delete the saved server entry and add it again with the IP address and port. Saved entries can stay stuck on the old way of connecting.
- Make sure the port is the same number everywhere: a router or host that maps one outside port to a different inside port will break the join details.
- Try one player on an older client. If they get in and updated players do not, it is this change.
On Saryno
You do not have to do any of this. Saryno servers with the Bedrock players add-on get a join port with TCP and UDP, a WebRTC port next to it, and a Geyser config that matches, and both old and updated Bedrock players join. If you added Geyser before this change, the server is updated for you. See Java and Bedrock crossplay hosting or let Bedrock players join your Java server.
